For many of you, this will be a first-time
experience. To help prepare you, to make the class run smoother, and to
make this experience a success for ALL of us, please take some time right
now to read the following:
An online class
requires A LOT more reading than traditional face-to-face classes, since you
will still need to read the textbook, plus all communication and assignments
are done online. You have to read everything very carefully and
follow the instructions. It's also a good idea to have some computer
skills, plus you need full access to the Internet that some providers like AOL
might now allow.
Time management
is critical for an online class. Since you have no scheduled class to
attend, you have to make yourself set a schedule of logging into Blackboard
several times per week to participate in the online discussions and watch the
deadlines for assignments. Once the semester begins, all communication
will be done through Blackboard. You will not email me directly or ever
send assignments directly to me.
Again, I would strongly
encourage you to read EVERYTHING!!!
But, remember, the Orientation is required reading.
Students often think
online classes are easier. I require the same amount of work from my
online classes as I do my traditional face-to-face classes. However, you
don't get to hear my lectures/talks about all these interesting topics, which
is why you have to do a lot more reading in an online class. On the
other hand, you can set your own schedule (as long as you can set one and
stick to it!) and work your own hours. I like to say - comfy at home in
your pajamas!
So - follow all the links
above and read all that, then let me know if you have any questions, ok?!
Here's to another great
semester - Debby!
BTW, your textbook Sexuality NOW by J. Carroll, customized for
Prof. Golden, is available in the bookstore but can often be found online
and MUCH cheaper!
